Guidance

Develop the judgment required for independent research

I work with late-undergraduate, master's, and doctoral researchers on inverse problems, regularization, scientific machine learning, and computational methods for differential equations.

01

Structured research preparation

A disciplined programme of reading, problems, and computational exercises. A typical sequence may move from Tikhonov regularization and total variation to forward models, adjoint methods, and learned regularizers.

Useful for: qualifying-exam preparation, entering a new research area, or building the mathematical foundation for a thesis.

02

Open-ended research discussion

Technical conversations about an active project: what the literature already establishes, where an argument is weak, which experiment should come next, and whether the proposed method fits the available data.

Useful for: researchers who are past the coursework stage and need a technically informed sounding board.

Areas where I can help

  • Linear and nonlinear inverse problems
  • Regularization theory and variational methods
  • Electrical impedance tomography
  • Seismic imaging and full waveform inversion
  • Physics-informed neural networks and neural operators
  • Numerical methods for partial differential equations

Coursework

Understand why a method works, then learn to use it correctly

My teaching begins with the mathematical structure of a problem, then develops the analysis and computation needed to solve it. Sessions use worked problems and direct feedback rather than passive explanation alone.

Analysis

Calculus, multivariable calculus, real analysis, and linear algebra

Differential equations

Ordinary and partial differential equations, including numerical solution methods

Scientific computing

Numerical analysis, iterative methods, discretization, and computational implementation

Optimization

Convex optimization, variational methods, and constrained problems

At CUHK, I led Calculus for Engineers tutorials for cohorts of more than 50 students and assisted with Games and Strategic Thinking. Earlier, I taught secondary mathematics to more than 100 students at KUST Staff School in Nigeria.

Feedback

Direct feedback on theses and manuscripts

I read drafts and identify what is clear, where an argument has gaps, what evidence is missing, and which points a referee is likely to question. Feedback is available worldwide and is not tied to any institution.

The work must fall within or close to my areas of expertise. For topics outside those areas, generic comments would not be a useful service.

Academic integrity

I provide feedback, direction, and technical discussion. I do not write assignments, thesis chapters, papers, examinations, or code on a student's behalf.

FAQ

Practical questions

Is support limited to students at particular institutions?

No. Research guidance and feedback are available worldwide. The relevant limitation is topic fit, not location or affiliation.

What if my topic is adjacent to your research?

Send a short description. If I can engage with the technical content rather than only the surface structure, the work may still be a good fit.

What does a longer engagement look like?

A structured programme often uses sessions every two weeks over two to three months, with reading and problems between meetings. Open-ended guidance is arranged around specific research questions.

How are rates determined?

Rates depend on the scope, preparation required, and duration. We agree on the arrangement in writing before any paid work begins.
